Constipation can take on many forms. It is NOT just the inability to have a bowel movement at least every couple of days. Healthy bowel habits include bowel movements that come out easily and quickly (not loose, but with a soft, well formed consistency), without a lot of straining, conclude with the sensation that your bowels have been completely evacuated, and occur on a regular basis. If that isn’t happening, then you run the risk of developing secondary symptoms such as abdominal fullness, bloating, fecal urgency, frequent gas, and nausea.
Having an adequate amount of insoluble fiber in your diet is essential for healthy bowel habits. With our western eating habits, Americans often struggle to eat enough fiber. Besides increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in you diet, a great way to get fiber naturally is to eat bran based cereals. (stay away from fiber gummies, pellets, and powders — they just don’t have enough fiber and are a waste of money!)
The recommended daily value for insoluble fiber intake is 30 grams. I have found that this is a good target to shoot for.
Try my Natural Remedy for Constipation Prescription, courtesy of Dr. Mark Moyad and Dr. Thomas Reilly:
Combine two cereals:
1/3 Cup Bran Buds
2/3 Cup Fiber One
Each cereal contains 15 grams of insoluble fiber, for 100% of your total daily value. When combined, it tastes pretty good too!
If you aren’t happy with it, then try mixing the Bran Buds with other cereals or yogurt, since these will pack the most punch.
Be sure to stay well hydrated and good luck! You will see the benefits almost right away!
